What To Do When You Have Bad Neighbors

Texas City Couple Dealing with a Noisy NeighborImagine moving into your new Texas City rental house expecting a piece of heaven only to find you’re living with a neighbor from hell. With bad neighbors, you are guaranteed to have bad experiences. But there are ways to deal with them and make the experience bearable. By following these basic “rules of engagement”, you could win this nightmare neighbor over and create a positive environment instead.

Be the Change

It is human nature to look at our neighbor’s mistakes before we look at our own behavior. It takes a man to admit that he is the problem rather than falsely accusing his neighbors of being a problem. Do you check your noise level? Are your pets behaving well? Are you doing what it takes to keep your property clean and tidy? How much respect do you give your neighbor’s property? By doing this self-check and addressing these questions, you are doing your part in being a good neighbor.

Get to Know Your Neighbor

It goes against our way of thinking but sometimes taking the first step is the best way to deal with a bad neighbor situation. Show your genuine concern for your neighbor through friendly communication. Make the first move by introducing yourself, and be friendly so you leave a positive image in your first interaction. The key is to establish a relationship, but don’t be discouraged if their response is negative. Gauge the situation, and if you think it’s time, bring up the problem behaviors in a polite, non-confrontational way. Just because you are being kind does not mean that your neighbor will now agree to whatever you are saying. But still, chalk this up as a win since you were able to communicate to them that their behavior is causing problems for others.

The Golden Rule

A bad neighbor who has a lot of complaints may need someone who can listen. Despite your best efforts, some neighbors will tend to take it against you and turn hostile or aggressive. We tend to “fight back” when we’re faced with this but it is much better to remain friendly and accommodating and think of the bigger picture. Put yourself out there and walk the extra mile by resolving your neighbor’s complaints and they may just do the same for you.

Document Everything

Showing kindness to your neighbor does not mean you don’t hold them accountable for their bad behavior. As you work with your neighbor, it is good to document what is going on with photos, videos, or other means. A video or photo of the problem behavior will provide much better evidence if you need to inform your other neighbors, the owner’s association, landlord, attorney, or even the local authorities. If possible, also keep a record of relevant dates, times, and conversations. Keep all phone and text messages and emails, if any. Chances are, you may never be able to use these videos and photos but it is still a good idea to be ready.

Contact the Authorities

If despite your best efforts your neighbor’s behaviors are still a problem, it may be time to involve the local authorities. Do not hesitate, especially if your neighbor threatens you, damages the property, or tries to harm you or someone in your household. Some behaviors can be mediated by the city’s code enforcement department, health department, owner’s association, or animal control. But things like illegal activity or violence must not be tolerated. You need to call the police at once.
